Provisional census figures 2011: India’s population touches 1.21 billion

The Registrar General of India released the provisional census figures today [31 March 2011]. We give below the main findings of the census.

Highlights:

Total population: 1210.19 million
    Males: 63.72 million (51.54%); females: 586.46 million (48.46%)
    Increase in population since 2001: total population: increase by 181 million or 17.64%
        males: increase by 17.64%, females: 18.12%

Overall sex ratio : 940 females per 1000 males: – 7 point Increases over 2001 from 933.
Total number of children in the age-group 0-6 is 158.8 million (-5 million since 2001)
Literacy rate has gone up from 64.83 per cent in 2001 to 74.04 per cent in 2011 showing an increase of 9.21%.

Trend: Population growth has slowed significantly as compared to previous decades and this trend is visible almost throughout the county. Sex ratio has become more favourable to women as compared to the earlier decade though it is still unacceptably low in many states. Literacy has gone up but not greatly; 26% people of age 7 years and above are still illiterate.

Top 2 states for sex ratio: Kerala (1084), Puducherry (1038)
Bottom 2 states for sex ratio: Daman & Diu (618), D&N Haveli (775)
Top 2 states for child sex ratio: Mizoram (971), Meghalaya (970)
Bottom 2 states for child sex ratio: Haryana (830), Punjab (846)
Three major States (J&K, Bihar & Gujarat) have shown decline in sex ratio as compared to Census 2001. 

States with highest literacy rates: Kerala (93.91%), Lakshadweep (92.28%)
States with lowest literacy rates: Bihar (63.82%), Arunachal Pradesh (66.95%)

States with highest population density: NCT of Delhi (11297 persons/sq km), Chandigarh (9252 p/km)
States with lowest population density: Arunachal Pradesh (17 persons/sq km), A&N Islands (46 p/km)
